Ultimate Southern Experience

I have out of town guests visiting. So they planned to spend the day in Memphis...oh yea...I got a call around 7 that they were under Tornado watch and the sirens were going off. They were at Applebee's and were getting cozy since the tornado watch was in effect for about an hour. Not only did they get to hear the sirens, but they got to see an amazing lightening storm and hear the massive thunder claps that we get. Add that to the 13 year cicada infestation that we are having and all I can say is, Welcome to Tennessee. :)

I have to say, the bad luck that seems to be targeting my friends better stay away from me. My friend got married over the weekend and on Monday left to go on her honeymoon...in Jamaica. Now you may have heard that the air traffic controllers in Jamaica are on strike, so my friend and probably hundreds of other people did not get to enjoy their planned honeymoon in Jamaica.

Now I'm not trying to head to Jamaica for a honeymoon, but I do have a bunch of out of town guests coming to visit. We are having a graduation celebration for my daughter and it's going to be outside amongst the cicadas. I want smooth sailing although its the twists and bumps that keep life interesting. I'm just so super excited that everyone is coming to visit. Will be great and I should have some fun stories to blog about when its all over.

I'm a big kid now

Mommy, do it it for me. Pwease???????

I love May 1st. It makes me think of tulips and iris's and daffodils in Oregon. It also makes me smile and think of the sweet (according to me) old lady who lived across the street. I'm not sure that everyone else would call her sweet, as a matter of fact, I know they wouldn't. She was sweet to me and I could do no wrong. :) Everybody needs someone like that in their life; someone who thinks that you hung the moon. Someone to always take your side and spoil you rotten. She was that for me and in return, on May Day (May 1st), I learned in school that you are supposed to give flowers to someone. My first grade brain interpreted this as an anonymous flower giving occasion to cheer up an old person. I don't know why or maybe it was just a project we did in school, but it stuck with me. So every year, on May Day, I would go across the street, pick all the pretty flowers that were blooming (yes, from the garden in front of her house) and put them on her doorstep and then ding dong ditch. When I was big enough to ring the doorbell that is. When I was still too small to reach the doorbell, I would just kick the corner of her screen door, then run and hide around the corner of her house. Which, now that I think of it, the corner of the screen door curled ever so slightly outward from me kicking it so often throughout the years. And of course I was the only one who ever did that, so she most certainly knew it was me, not to mention that she probably watched me pick all of her flowers first, they were after all, just underneath her living room window. But in my kid mind, I was doing something nice to brighten her day.

Nashville has fared well through the storms and only a few times have we had to go to our safe place. Two of those times I was at work, so we went into the stairwell, the other time was about 5 minutes after I left work and I was in my car, so I couldn't do anything. It was rather freaky but it passed by really quickly. We have had so many tornado watches that it seems almost like the boy who cried wolf...the weatherman who cried tornado, but in this case, I'm still going to take them seriously because with my luck, the one time I didn't believe them, the storms would produce a tornado and I'd be caught unprepared. And hey, I get paid for the time we have to sit in the stairwell, so I'm not complaining. :)

Kumbaya Circle

It seems like you don't encounter it as much anymore, but it seems like whenever we would go camping, some group, somewhere in the campground would bring a guitar and pretty soon, people would be sitting in a circle singing Kumbaya. It was usually hippies or church groups... I guess now it's a different song, but the sentiment is the same. It's still cheesy and I hate it when people do that...the singing part, not the gathering around part. I like gatherings. I also like going out to lunch and getting a text that the power is out at work and coming back into the office to see everyone gathered around my desk having a non-singing Kumbaya circle. And what is better than an hour and a half paid non-singing Kumbaya circle??? Getting to leave early on a Friday afternoon because they don't know when the power will be restored. Oh yea! Great way to start the weekend! :)

I got a really fun phone call this weekend with some wonderful news that as time goes on I'm sure I will share with everyone, but right now I've got to mind my tongue and not blurt it out. But it's SUPER!

To top off our weekend, Jordan and I got up bright and early, much to her chagrin, to meet my friend Michael at the park to take her senior pictures. My little cutie patootie is NOT comfortable in front of the camera but she finally relaxed a little to take some really great shots. It was funny because as Michael was in work mode, he would give her one word commands, like "stop" or "stay" which was hilarious because it was like he was speaking to a dog. She had me nervous at one point climbing down a muddy slope...I could totally see her slipping and falling into the river. To make matters worse, Michael was trying to take pics of her and was slipping on the bank opposite her and having a hard time keeping his footing. I wasn't so worried if she fell because I knew Michael had the camera ready and would get some great shots! I was worried that he would fall in and I'd have to replace his camera. At another point she was climbing a tree branch so awkwardly and clumsily but Michael somehow managed to capture a couple shots that actually made her look graceful. Ha! Graceful! That is not something that is usually said about ANY member of my family, let alone me or my offspring.

No History

I'm having a bit of nostalgia. Just found out that the college I graduated from might be closing. Sad. I've got some really great memories and stories about that place. Sad because there was always one last thing that I've always wanted to do there and now may not ever get the chance. Unfulfilled aspirations... :( Not to mention, now what do I put on my resume? My history will have a blank now.

My daughter can see! She got glasses and they are super cute. She waited patiently after having our appointment rescheduled - twice. Then when we picked them up, one of the lenses has a crack in it! It's teeny tiny and completely out of her line of vision, but SO disappointing though. They had to order a new lens and will pop out the cracked lens and then she will have her perfect glasses and perfect eyesight. Not to mention, she looks completely adorable. I may be biased, but her glasses look super on her. Stylish little thing got the Coach brand frames. Thank you UPS for having such great insurance plans!

New Monopoly Mascot

I finally broke down and went to the eye doctor. It takes me a really long time to focus on something so thought I should have it checked out. Turns out my eyes are basically fine. I'm actually good in my right eye, but my left eye, well... I can either cover my left eye when I want to see perfectly clear or live with a teeny tiny bit of blur. My eyes aren't bad enough to warrant a prescription however the Dr. told me I could get a monocle. Jordan looked at me and shook her head wishing instantly that the Dr. never said that because of course now I want a monocle! I don't think I could walk around with it on a silly gold chain so I think I would want it on a leather strap. Leather straps are much cooler than those granny chains. The only problem is, I'm not sure how well I could hold it or wedge it between my cheekbone and eyebrow. I would end up squinching up that side of my face. Not a good look for me. So I've figured out a way to wear a monocle without having to fidget with it or walk around with half my face squinched up - hook two straps on the side of it and wear it like an eye patch. Brilliant right?! And how much fun would it be to flip up my eye patch monocle to give people the evil eye?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! One word - AWESOME! I totally want a monocle now. It's either that or I'll get glasses and pop out the lense for my good eye. Still, the monocle would be so great - I could be the new Monopoly Guy/Gal.

Like: Only having to eat corned beef and cabbage once a year

Not so much: Beer and cabbage farts

Older Than Dirt?

The kids had the house all decorated and clean when I got home from work yesterday. They even made me a cake, well, two actually. One chocolate and one funfetti. :) They had candles going and presents wrapped and took me out to dinner, my choice! It was so great, you'd think it was my birthday or something... I got new pots to replant my blueberries in and I got a super cool mosaic mirror and dirt. I got dirt - wrapped in pretty paper with a bow and everything. I hope they didn't give me the dirt as a not so subtle hint that they think I'm older than it...the dirt. I don't feel older than dirt. But then again, to a 16 and 17 year old, 29 must feel like one adult diaper away from death. Yea, that's right, I said 29. GOT A PROBLEM WITH IT?!?!?!?!?!?!

After dinner last night, I remember why I don't take my daughter out in public very often. We were at a steak house and they had A-1 steak sauce on the table. I hear a weird sniffing noise and looked over to see my daughter coyly holding the A-1 bottle and looking at me with a silly grin. She likes the smell of A-1 sauce and was sniffing it while waiting for our food to arrive! It's a good thing I don't get embarrassed or something like my daughter huffing steak sauce might just do the trick.

I'm going to get some cake and torture the kitties with some of the balloons floating around here. Bye.

March Happiness

Not only does March make me so very happy because it's my birthday month but because flowers are blooming and its getting warmer outside and because we are starting to hear back from colleges. It's exciting...and nerve wracking...but mostly exciting. Had a great college visit the other day with Jordan. She's considering a TN school and we both came away from the visit surprisingly impressed. Much more than we expected to be. She's eligible for the honors program and due to her high score on her SAT, she won't have to take Freshman English but will still get credit for it. That made her very happy. It's not her first choice school but it's totally affordable and the scholarships she could be eligible for are amazing. Of course next year, since she missed the cut-off time for the year...

I've shared before how much I love bumper stickers. I got to embarrass Devan the other day and make myself super happy all at the same time. Win / Win situation!!! We were driving to go get dinner the other night and Devan's little girlfriend was along when I saw a wood paneled station wagon go by that had bumper stickers ALL over it. We got alongside it and tried to read a few but that wasn't enough for me...I decided to follow them so that I could continue reading their propaganda wagon. They ended up pulling over into the high school parking lot so we pulled in behind them and when they got out Jordan and I ran over and started reading their car. It was so much fun! Devan was embarrassed and I got to read lots and lots of fun bumper stickers. They were covering the entire car. Made me happy.

Mean and Hateful

It's a very good thing that I was too exhausted last night to update this. I was mean and hateful yesterday after my drive home. I had to be COMPLETELY anti-social by the time I got home or I would have said awful awful things. What happened you ask?! It snowed in Tennessee. Grrr! EVERY SINGLE person who had driven to work, left work at exactly the same time and 99 percent of them don't know how to drive in the snow! It took me four and half hours to get home! FOUR AND A HALF HOURS!!!!!! I literally went 2.4 miles in 2 hours. The best part - .4 of that was when I had to turn around and go back the way I came because the cops closed the road. ACK! If people had been able to hear what I was saying or worse yet thinking, I'm sure I would have gotten slapped and or punched quite a few times. It's a good thing I filter my words before I speak because sometimes what I'm truly thinking is really not nice. In fact, it's downright mean. It's charming when House does it, but in non-TV world, people don't like it and don't put up with it. People put up with House because he's brilliant and they need his help, nobody really needs my help and while I think I'm brilliant, nobody would put up with me if I behaved like House.

Instead, let's talk about happy things. There is a positive side to the cold snowy weather. Besides that everything is bright and the sky is clear, the sun comes out during the day and begins to melt the snow which means....icicles! Not only are they super interesting to look at, but they are even more fun to kick! It's such a simple pleasure but it brings me so much joy to get to kick the icicles off my car.

I know you caught that I said "things" in the paragraph above and yet I mentioned only one thing there. Well, icicles is plural so technically, they could be the only happy things I was referring to, but alas, I'm not done talking to you about happy things. Bendy straws! Yes, I did say bendy straws. You know they secretly make you happy too. There is a restaurant around here that we will go to occasionally that gives you a bendy straw. I always forget they have bendy straws so when I open my straw, I'm pleasantly surprised and of course to have pull it open all the way then close it then open it then close it as if playing an accordion. Hey, I found an instrument I'm good at playing: the accordion straw! Although after I'm done playing my straw, I have a small moment of indecision when I then have to decide on the angle of the bend in the straw. It can be so stressful. I mean, bent too far then I have to lift my drink up too far and its awkward and not bent enough and what's the use of having a bendy straw. It's very difficult finding just the right angle for my straw. The best part is though, the straw is totally accommodating to my indecisiveness since I can adjust it before or after each drink. It's almost as if its challenging me to be indecisive and I gladly oblige. Aaaahhhh, simple pleasures.

It's not my fault

I finally get my hands on one of the computers and wouldn't you know it, a child is hovering...pestering me, are you done yet? Aren't you done? What have you been doing all this time, you were supposed to be updating the blog...

We are surviving the Snowpocalypse and even got a few pics so when I get a few more minutes, I'll post pics of my cutie patooties in the snow. Gotta at least give props to my kids -no phallic snow sculptures this year.

I'm Counting It

I posted a funny but it wouldn't show so I had to delete it. I guess the pic was too big? Not sure. Oh well. I still count that as an update though, so I'm still doing fairly decent on my resolution to update this often. IT COUNTS!!! just cuz you couldn't see it doesn't mean I didn't do it....

Let's Review

The Holidays were great. My crafty and cunning ways totally worked in my favor. I was off work on Christmas Eve so did a little running around to get my ugly ornament and pick up one more gift. Success on the gift and success on the ugly ornament. Christmas Eve was fun though, a friend came over and as we were walking out the door to go to a candlelight Christmas Eve service, the kids decided to come with us. I like to think it was my ability to lay on the guilt with my comment "I'd really like it if you came with us." Devan was in shorts and a sweatshirt and Jord had just gotten out of the shower so her hair was all wet, but they came. :) We came home afterward and had a simple dinner then decided to paint ornaments. We spent the rest of the evening painting these cute wooden ornaments I found at the craft store. I love that I can get those around me to do nerdy stuff with me.

Christmas morning was full of fun presents, good company, and a super yummy breakfast. I think my plate was magic.
When I sat down to eat there was already food on my plate and when I got up to get something from the kitchen more food appeared on my plate. Magic! I did try grits Christmas morning. Rest assured, I'm not turning southern on all y'all, I didn't like the grits.

The ugly ornaments this year were great - as usual...
and the winner is...the fox with the wanky eye! Submitted by Devan's bff - Sean.

OOOHHHHHH, EEWWWW!!!! I just reached down into the edge of the sofa and came up with a bunch of pretzels, a few candy wrappers and 8 count them, 8 ponytail elastics! Gggaaaaahhhhh.

New Year's was nice and quiet. I did manage to stay
up and ring in the new year. Yay me! Devan's best friend Sean came over so they stayed home and played guitar and played on their computers. Jordan and I went to dinner with my friend and his son. One of Devan's favorite gifts was a Boba Fett helmet (character from Star Wars). As we were leaving the pizza place after dinner, a couple guys came walking in wearing...Boba Fett helmets! Too funny. Helmet heads unite!

Now we've got the threat of a full on blizzard. They are anticipating 5-6 inches of snow. The city will come to a halt and there will not be bread or milk within a 50 mile radius. They've already closed school in our county as well as 10 other counties. So far no snow. Hope it wasn't a bunch of hype but so far...............nothing..........*sigh* (insert eye roll for the overly dramatic reaction to the POSSIBILITY of snow)

2011 - The Year of Lies

I'm starting off the year as a liar. Well, actually, not really, I get off on a technicality. This is an update so technically I'm updating my blog but I'm not sharing about my holidays yet because I'm tired and want to go to bed. I'm not feeling well so took a long nap this afternoon after sleeping in late this morning, then I had plans this evening. I went to the comedy club to see Tim Wilson. Funny hillbilly comedian. So while I'm not technically a liar, I feel I have deceived you. Holiday update coming soon. I promise. (How many of you are wondering if you can really believe that?)
